Chapter 19 The Closing Net
Detective Druce and the silver-haired old man were standing in the hall. The latter looked up quickly as Peter and Angela enteredâhis manner was almost bird-like in its nervous brisknessâwhile the detective paused in the middle of a remark, and frowned.
âHallo, Mr Druce!â exclaimed Peter shamelessly. âWeâve just been on a little tour of inspection.â
Druce made no comment just then. He merely inclined his head toward the silver-haired old man, and announced:
âThis is Doctor Glade.â To Angela he added, âI dare say youâve met the doctor before?â
âNo, this is our first meeting,â chirped the doctor, advancing and taking her hand. âI am only sorry we could not have met underâhâmâhappier conditions. But crises pass. Yes, crises pass. As a medical man I can assure you of that, Miss Vernon.â He turned toward Peter with a smile. âWe have still to be introduced.â
âMy name is Armstrong,â replied Peter, studying him. âI dare say Mr Druce has told you I am staying here. Tell me, doctorâwhatâs happened to Sir Julius?â
âSir Julius?â repeated Dr Glade, and pursed his lips. He glanced toward the detective, and shook his head. âIâm afraid I havenât any too good news of Sir Julius.â
âWhy, what has happened to him?â cried Angela.
âHeâs had rather a nasty accident,â proceeded the doctor, and, as he spoke, there flashed into the minds of both Angela and Peter a memory of Mrs Catesbyâs forecast. âThereâs rather a bad hill before my house.â They recalled the hill, too, in the housekeeperâs prediction. âIâm afraid the chauffeurâs brakes were defectiveâââ
âYes, yes, but is he badly hurt?â interrupted Peter.
âHe is unconscious,â responded Dr Glade. âButâyesâI think we shall pull him through.â
Angela gave a little exclamation, and turned suddenly away. Peter controlled himself more successfully, and continued quietly:
âWhat about the chauffeur, doctor? Was he hurt too?â
âThe chauffeur,â murmured Dr Glade, and again glanced toward the detective. âBetter tell them, eh? Very sad, very sad. The chauffeur, my dear Mr Armstrong, I regret to say, isâhâmâdead.â
âThe trip seems to have been a disastrous one,â said Detective Druce, taking up the story. âWhen I left you, Mr Armstrong, I found there was no available car, and I had to walk to the doctorâs house. I met him, coming here in his own car, when he had completed three-quarters of the journey. He told me what had happened, and I returned with him hereâââ
âYou mean you havenât seen Sir Julius?â exclaimed Peter.
âI had to choose between seeing Sir Julius, who had been attended to, and returning to Miss Ayrton, who had not,â came the detectiveâs dry rejoinder. âObviously Sir Julius had to wait. But I am going back to see Sir Julius now, and then I shall be able to see him myselfâand form my own conclusions.â
âWho is with him now?â asked Angela.
âI keep a nurse on the premises,â broke in the doctor. âA most efficient womanâmost efficient.â
âThen I suppose itâs necessary for you to go back?â queried Peter. âThis minute?â
âI am particularly anxious to go back,â returned Detective Druce, looking at the young man significantly.
